Colors are powerful. They evoke memories, emotions, and reactions. If I asked you, “What is your favorite color?” what would you answer?
My journey as an artist has always been driven by color and light. Clear skies and a bright sun reign over a rich landscape and illuminate shapes and colors that I find irresistible. A sunlit morning reveals a glowing green in an agave. And in the evening, a fading light makes the rolling hills look like velvet.
But the constant for me is the sky. The blue sky. Covering me, wherever I go, like a security blanket. Predictable, ever-present. The backdrop of my life, of your life, too. And do we take the time to notice? Have you noticed how its shade of cerulean is different along the California coast than it is in Hawaii, or in Arizona?
And if you are looking up at the sky, that means you are out-of-doors. You are not inside. You are not looking at a screen. You are breathing fresh air and maybe feeling better about the day. And that’s good, because there is so much pain and darkness in the day. But not outside. Not under a blue sky.
And so for this series, I am chasing blue. Not blue flowers or landscapes necessarily, but the things under the blue sky. Things I noticed, moments I cherished, gifts from God that moved me. Because for me, chasing blue means chasing my personal blues away.
